The Jute Manufactures Development Council (JMDC) is a Govt. of India Statutory Body set up under the JMDC Act, 1983 and is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India. The Council was originally set up in 1976 under the I (D & R) Act, 1951.
JMDC administers and utilises the cess fund created out of a compulsory levy on production of Jute manufactures.
As per the Act, JMDC is required to implement a varied range of developmental and promotional activities, covering raw jute, R&D and market promotion. However, with the existence of other organisations like NCJD, IJIRA etc., JMDC is virtually designated to be the national catalytic agency to perform functions mainly relating to development and promotion of jute goods in consonance with the following relevant spelt out objectives, as per statute.
