Yarn guide |
An element which guides the yarn. |
Yarn Intermediate |
A generic term for products obtained during the conversion of fibers to yarn including card webs laps slivers rovings and tops. |
Yarn linear density |
Methods of variously expressing the mass per unit length or the length per unit mass of a yarn. (See also tex system, linear density, titre and Tables, p.396~397.) note: The term 'size' is used in North America for count of yarn. |

Yarn Quality |
Various grades of yarn designated by the producer with respect to performance characteristics e.g. first quality second quality etc. |
Yarn setting |
The process of conferring stability of form upon fibres, yarns, fabrics, or garments, usually by means of successive heating and cooling in dry or moist conditions. |

Yarn sizing, single-end |
The application of size to textile yam,, in single-end form during winding from one yam package to another. note 1: The words 'single-end' here embrace any textile yarns, whether single or plied. note 2.. Methods of application include: (i) bobbin-to-bobbin sizing: Double-flanged bobbins arranged in a battery and fitted with yarntraversing motions are rotated to pull yarn from a similar battery of unrolling bobbins. In transit, each end of yarn passes in contact either over or under a roller immersed in size solution in a suitable trough: hot air is circulated over the yam and take-up bobbins to help in drying the applied size. (ii) Yarn from a supply cheese or bobbin (e.g., an uptwister take-up package) is wound on to a sized-yarn package by a winding spindle of a precision winding machine. In transit, the yarn makes contact with a size roller partially immersed in size solution. note 3: The term 'gumming' applies to the process innote 2 (ii) and is derived from the gummy nature of some size solutions, and from the adhesive properties of size. Size, however, is not synonymous with gum and for this reason many mill technologists consider that the term ,gumming should be discouraged. note 4.. Size is applied to some rayon yarns in cake form but this method is covered by the term cake sizing. |

Yarn slippage |
The unwanted movement of yams in a woven fabric due to the warp and weft yams slipping over each other. note 1: Yam slippage may occur during garment manufacture, or in garment components during wear, as a result of excessive stress or abrasion. note 2: Yams in a fabric have a greater or lesser tendency to slip depending on factors such as yarn type, weave, ends and picks per unit length, fabric weight, and the type of finishing process. |

Yarn Variation |
See RING. |
Yarn-To-Cord Conversion Efficiency |
In tire cord this is a measurement relating tensile strength of untwisted yarn to tensile strength of cord. Increasing cord twist or increasing yarn diameter lowers conversion efficiency. |

Yellowing |
1. See oxidized oil staining. 2. The yellow discoloration that may develop on textile materials during processing, use, or storage. |
Yellowness Coefficient |
Measure of the color of a molded acetate disc or dope solution. Cy = 1-T4400/T6400 where Cy is the yellowness coefficient; T4400 is the transmission at 4400 (blue); and T6400 is the transmission at 6400A (orange). © 2001 Celanese Acetate LLC |

Yield |
1. Number of linear or square yards of fabric per pound of fiber or yarn. 2. The number of finished square yards per pound of greige fabric. |
