Yard Denier |
The denier of a filament yarn. It is the product of the denier per filament and the number of filaments in the yarn. |
Yard Goods |
Fabric sold on a retail basis by the running yard. |
Yardage |
The amount or length of a fabric expressed in yards. |
Yarn |
A product of substantial length and relatively small cross-section consisting of fibres and/or filaments) with or without twist. note:Assemblies of fibres or filaments are usually given other names during the stages that lead to the production of yarn, e.g., tow, stubbing, sliver, or roving. Except in the case of continuousfilament or tape yarns, any tensile strength possessed by assemblies at these stages is generally the minimum that can hold them together during processing. |
Yarn accumulator |
A device which stores a controlled amount of yarn between a supply package and a fabric producing machine. It is used to minimise the effect of tension variation in the yarn as it is unwound from the supply package in order to improve tension control during fabric formation. (See also weft accumulator.) |
Yarn carrier (flat or straight-bar knitting machines) |
The final element that guides yarn to the knitting instruments. |
Yarn clearer |
A device designed to cut or break yarn when it detects changes in mass or diameter which exceed set limits. Yarn clearers are normally part of, or an addition to, a winding machine. |
Yarn Construction |
A term used to indicate the number of singles yarns and the number of strands combined for form each successive unit of a plied yarn or cord. |
Yarn count |
Methods of variously expressing the mass per unit length or the length per unit mass of a yarn. (See also tex system, linear density, titre and Tables, p.396~397.) Note: The term 'size' is used in North America for count of yarn. |
Yarn Dyeing Differences |
Variations in take-up of dyes by yarns resulting in streaks in finished fabrics. |
Yarn evenness |
Variation in mass per unit length of yarn (along the length of the yarn). (See also U%.) |
Yarn From Filament Tow |
The formation of a yarn from filament tow by a combination of cutting or breaking drafting and twisting in a single series of operations. Also known as converting. |
Yarn From Leaf And Bast Fiber |
In the manufacture of leaf and bast fiber yarns the terms “wet spinning” and “dry spinning” refer to the spinning of fibers in the wet state and in the air-dry state respectively. 4 |
Yarn From Staple Fiber |
The formation of a yarn by a combination of drawing or drafting and twisting prepared strands of fibers such as rovings. |
