WordMeaning

  •

Reel

1. An unsupported coil (e.g., approximately 135cm in circumference) composed of wraps of yarn or sliver and wound on a reeling machine with a cross-wound pattern that allows the resulting assembly of strands to be leased (see leasing).

  •

Reeling

In silk fiber production the process of unwinding the cocoon.

  •

Reeling machine

A revolving frame on to which a number of hanks or skeins or reels of yarn or roving are wound simultaneously. The frame normally comprises a number of parallel bars (some or all of which collapse to facilitate removal of the wound hank) mounted circumferentially on a cylindrical form. Traversing yam guides provide a pattern which enables the hank to be leased so that it can be unwound without entanglement after storage or, e.g., wet processing.

  •

Refractive index

The ratio of the velocity of light in a vacuum to that in a given material. It may be used in fibre identification or as a measure of fibre orientation. (See also birefringence.)

  •

Refractory Fiber

Oxide or non-oxide amorphous or crystalline manufactured fiber generally used for applications at temperatures greater the 1063°C in both oxidizing and nonoxidizing atmospheres i.e. Al2O3 ZrO2 Al2O3•SiO2.

  •

Regain

The ratio of the mass of moisture in a material to the oven-dry mass. The ratio is usually expressed as a percentage and is calculated as follows:Total moist mass - Oven dry mass X 100/ Oven - dry mass

  •

Regain Standard

See STANDARD MOISTURE REGAIN.

  •

Regatta

A striped cotton-type fabric woven in 2/1 twill. The pattern consists of fast-dyed colour and white in warp stripes of equal width. The fabric has a white or undyed weft, typically: 30x25; 30x33tex; K=16.4+14.4.

  •

Regenerated Cellulose

A material which begins as cellulose but at some stage in the chemical processing takes the form of another chemical compound then appears again in its completed state as cellulose. Viscose and cuprammonium rayons are regenerated cellulose.

  •

Regenerated cellulose fibre

1. (Generic name U.S.A.) A manufactured fibre composed of regenerated cellulose, as well as manufactured fibres composed of regenerated cellulose in which substituents have replaced not more than 15% of the hydrogens of the hydroxyl groups.
Note: The ISO generic names are viscose, modal, and cupro. (See also Classification Table, p.401.)
2. A term used in some manufacturing countries for any manufactured cellulose fibre, including, in some cases, fibres composed of cellulose acetate.

  •

Regenerated fibre

A fibre formed from a solution of a natural polymer or of a chemical derivative of a natural polymer and having the same chemical constitution as the natural polymer from which the solution or derivative was made.

  •

Regenerated protein fibre

A fibre formed from a solution of a natural polymer or of a chemical derivative of a natural polymer and having the same chemical constitution as the natural polymer from which the solution or derivative was made.

  •

Regina

A fine 2/1 twill of good quality, typically: 57x28; 7-10tex cotton type in warp and weft. Twofold yarns can also be used and the fabric is around 100 G/m2,

  •

Reindeer fibre (hair)

Fibre from the reindeer (Genus Rangifer).

  •

Related Shades

Colors of similar tone in the same or different depths.
