Half-Milano rib, weft-knitted

A weft -knitted rib-based fabric, consisting of one row of 1x1 rib (A)and on crow of plain knitting (B) made on either set of needles. The appearance and characteristics of the fabric are related to the ratio of the course lengths of A and B. (See also Milano rib, weft-knitted and double

Half-point (knitting)

Half-point transfer (knitting)

A needle loop expanded over two or more wales.
Note: Applied to stockings, the term spread loop refers to expansion over two wales and the stockings are described as 'mesh' or (technically) 'half-point transfer'. The stitch has ladder resistant properties.

Hand

The quality of a fabric or yarn assessed by the reaction obtained from the sense of touch.
Note: 11 is concerned with the judgement of roughness, smoothness, harshness, pliability, thickness, etc.

Hand wheel (sewing machine)

A wheel at the drive end of the machine arm, enabling the movement of the take-up lever and needle to be controlled by hand during sewing or, more commonly, when rethreading.
Note: Technological improvements have reduced the need for operators to touch the hand wheel during sewing, but the wheel is retained to assist when making adjusti-nents and i-ethreading.

Hand-Blocked Print

A fabric that has been printed by hand with wooden or linoleum blocks. (Also see PRINTING.)

Hand-hold

Additional courses used in the manufacture of knitted articles either as protective courses or to facilitate handling in subsequent operations. These courses are afterwards removed.

Hand-knotted carpet

A carpet made by knotting tufts around the warp yarns during hand weaving.

Handknitting yarn

A yam which has been manufactured, finished and packaged for use in halid knitting.
Note.. The most common form of package is a ball of 20, 25, 50 or 100 grammes. Hanks and occasionally cones can also be used. Handknitting yarns are produced in a number of generic forms, e.g., fingering, double knitting and 'knits-as-four-ply'. These forms have historic structural definitions, but due to the wide diversity of product range existing today, a recommended knitting tension should be specified for a handknitting yarn. Handknitting tension can not easily be measured and is indirectly expressed in terms of the number of stitches and rows that will produce a given area of the knitted fabric structure or pattern using a specified needle size.

Handloom

A hand operated machine for producing cloth by weaving. In some instances, the shedding is performed by foot operation. (See also weaving machine.)

Hang Pick

A pick that is caught on a warp yarn knot for a short distance which produces a triangular hole in the fabric. Hang picks usually result from knots that are tied incorrectly shuttle tension that is too loose or harness that is timed too early.

Hank

1. An unsupported coil (e.g., approximately 135cm in circumference) composed of wraps of yarn or sliver and wound on a reeling machine with a cross-wound pattern that allows the resulting assembly of strands to be leased (see leasing).

Note 2.. The hank is the traditional unit of length in the indirect system of yarn count, e.g., the cotton count of a yarn is calculated as the number of hanks of 840yds per pound (see Table, p.397).
