Grass bleaching

A process for bleaching linen cloth after it has been washed by exposing it, while spread out on grass lawn or field known as a green, to the action of the elements.

Gray

Descriptive of textile products before being bleached, dyed or finished. Some, however, may contain dyed or finished yams. (See also loom-state.)
Note: In the linen and lace trades, the tenn brown goods (see brown lace) is sometimes used.

Grease wool

Unscoured wool as shorn from the sheep.

Greasy piece

A piece of woollen fabric as it comes from the loom.

Grecian alhambra

figured quilting fabric in which Grecian weaves are largely used.

Grecian weave

A weave based on the counter-change principle and having floats of warp and weft that produce either a rough surface or a cellular effect on both sides of the fabric. Modifications of the basic Grecian weave are also made, in some of which the warp and weft floats appear on the face side of the fabric only.

Green flax

Scutched flax produced from deseeded straw without any intermediate treatment such as retting.

Green Tack

A term used in fabric bonding for the preliminary bond created in the first stage of curing by the wet adhesive process. At this point the bond is not fully cured and hence is “green.”

Greige

Greige Fabric

An unfinished fabric just off the loom or knitting machine.

Grenadine

A thrown silk yam similar to organzine, but having a higher twist.

Grex

1. A unit of linear density equal to the weight in grams of 10 kilometers of yarn filament fiber or other textile strand. 2. The system of yarn numbering based on the use of grex units. (Also see YARN NUMBER.)
