Fleecy fabric, weft-knitted

1. A general term for any weft-knitted fabric which has been brushed or raised on one or both sides.
2. A specific term for a plain, weft-knitted fabric with a ground yarn in which a yarn of low twist, laid-i n and secured by a binder, appears on the back of the fabric and may be brushed or raised.
Note.. Fleecy fabrics may be produced with only two yarns. (See also laid-in fabric, weft-knitted.)

Flexibility

1. The ability to be flexed or bowed repeatedly without rupturing. 2. A term relating to the hand of fabric referring to ease of bending and ranging from pliable (high) to stiff (low).

Flexible intermediate bulk container

A fabric container used for transporting and storing quantities (approximately 1 to 5 tonnes) of bulk commodities, such as powders and granular materials.
Note: The containers are characterised by webbing or fabric lifting loops that enable them to be handled mechanically by crane or fork-lift. They may be made from coated or uncoated woven fabric and may be fitted with an inner liner made of polymer film and filling and emptying tubes. Uncoated fabrics are normally constructed from tape yarns woven at high sett to give a fabric of low permeability. FIBCs may be designed to be single trip or multiple trip.

Flexural Fatigue

A physical property expressed by the number of times a material can be bent on itself through a prescribed angle before it ruptures or loses its ability to recover.

Flexural rigidity

A measure of the resistance of materials to bending by external forces. It is related to stiffness and is one of the factors sensed when a fabric is handled.
Note: Flexural rigidity is one of the factors that determine the manner in which a fabric drapes.

Flipper fabric

A rubber-coated cross-woven fabric which is placed around the bead section assembly and serves to reinforce the join between apex and casing plies.
note.. In all-metallic radial-ply tyres this filler often consists of a ply of wire cords.( sub category of tyre textiles)

Float

1. The portion of a warp or filling yarn that extends over two or more adjacent filling picks or warp ends in weaving for the purpose of forming certain designs. 2. In a knit fabric a portion of yarn that extends for some length without being knitted in. 3. A fabric defect consisting of an end lying or floating on the cloth surface instead of being woven in properly. Floats are usually caused by slubs knot-tails knots or fly waste or sometimes by ends being drawn in heddle eyes incorrectly or being twisted around heddle wires.

Float (defect)

Local incorrect interlacing of warp and weft threads in a woven fabric. This is often due to some interference with the opening of the shed, one or more ends being prevented from following the movement of the healds carrying them.
Note: Such interference may be caused by a broken end, a large knot or waste in the shed. Stitching i-nay also arise near. the selvedges if a clean, open shed is not formed before the shuttle enters, owing, for instance, to lack of sufficient warp tension. Additionally the defect may be caused by a wrong lift.

Float (lace)

1. A pattern thread traversed over more than one wale and not tied to the intermediate warp thread or threads.
2. See clips.

Float (warp knitting)

A length of yarn not received by a needle and connecting two loops of nonconsecutive courses.

Float (weave)

A length of yarn on the surface of a fabric between adjacent intersections. This corresponds to the number of threads over or under which the intersecting yarn passes in a woven structure.

Float loop

A length (or lengths) of yarn not received by a needle and connecting two loops of the same course that are not in adjacent wales.

Float-plated fabric, knitted

A fabric constructed by the knitting of a plated fabric in which the face yam is floated at certain needles to allow the other yam to appear on the face.(sun category of plated fabric weft-knitted)
