Fingering yarn

A plied handknitting yarn normally produced in 2, 3 or 4-ply to a specific diameter. The count of the 4-ply yarn is half that of a double knitting yarn.

  •

Finings, bobbin (lace)

A leavers-lace construction in which threads from the brass bobbin provide the filling-in of the objects. Both S and Z warps are necessary, and one thread of each twist is required for every bobbin thread. Although the warp threads traverse, the greater tension of the S-twist threads causes them to remain straight and to pull the bobbin threads sideways. The Z-twist warp threads interlace with the bobbin threads down the centre of the wale. In addition, thick threads from beams may be used, according to the pattern requirements, for outlining the objects

Finish

A term used broadly in the textile industries to include:desired properties.
2. A process, physical or chemical, applied to a substrate to produce a desired effect.
3. Properties, e.g., smoothness, drape, lustre, gloss or crease resistance produced by 1 and/or 2 above.
4. To apply or produce a finish.finishingDescriptive of processes, physical or chemical, applied to a substrate to produce a desired effect.

  •

Finish Composition (Yard)

Physical and chemical analysis of the lubricant applied to yarns to reduce friction and improve processibility.

  •

Finish Turns

The actual degree of twist in the final yarn product.

  •

Finished Fabric

Fabric that is ready for the market having passed through the necessary finishing processes.

  •

Finishing

All the processes through which fabric is passed after bleaching dyeing or printing in preparation for the market or use. Finishing includes such operations as heat-setting napping embossing pressing calendering and the application of chemicals that change the character of the fabric. The term finishing is also sometimes used to refer collectively to all processing operations above including bleaching dyeing printing etc.

  •

Finishing Bar

A noticeable streak across the entire width of a fabric usually caused by machine stoppage during processing.

  •

Finishing Spot

A discolored area on a fabric caused by foreign material such as dirt grease or rust.

  •

Fique

A fibre from the leaf of the plant Furcraea macroj)hylla.

  •

Fire retardant

A substance added, or a treatment applied to, a material in order to suppress, significantly reduce or delay the combustion of the material.

  •

Fire-Blocking Layer

A fabric layer composed of fibers with flame-retardant properties used in aircraft seat cushions and other upholstery constructions to decrease the overall flammability of the total construction by preventing access of flame to the body of the construction.

  •

Firmness factor

A term derived from cloth-setting theories: it takes account both of the thread-spacing relative to the yarn diameter (cover factor) and of the frequency of the interfacings. It may be referred to as a percentage of the maximum possible cover factor for a particular weave structure (percentage cover).
Note.. For plain-weave, it is identical with the cover factor; for other weaves, e.g., for twill weaves, it is the cover factor multiplied by a value characteristic of the weave and indicative of the frequency of the interfacings.

  •

First Quality

See YARN QUALITY.

  •

First-Order Transition Temperature

The temperature at which a polymer freezes or melts.
