Elongation At Break |
The increase in length when the last component of the specimen breaks. |
Elysian fabric |
A thick, soft woollen fabric in which extra weft is floated to the surface and subsequently burst in the finishing treatment. The floats may be planned for various patterns, such as twills and waved effects. The ground structure may be a single (weave A) or double (weave B) fabric. |
Emboss |
To produce a pattern in relief by passing fabric through a calender in which a heated metal bowl engraved with the pattern works against a relatively soft bowl built up of compressed paper or cotton on a metal centre. |
Embossing |
A calendering process for producing raised or projected figures or designs in relief on fabric surfaces. Embossed surfaces are usually produced on fabrics by engraved heated rollers that give a raised effect. Embossed velvet or plush is made by shearing the pile to different levels or by pressing part of the pile flat. |
Embroidery |
A decorative pattern superimposed on an existing fabric by machine stitching or hand needlework. |
Embroidery lace |
A lace construction obtained by working with any suitable stitching thread on a preexisting ground of bobbinet, tulle, net, or lace, in order to produce an ornamental effect on that ground. |
Embroidery-plated fabric, knitted |
A fabric constructed by the superimposing of one or more additional ends of yam over a restricted but variable width of weft-knitted fabric, so that the loops formed by the additional yarns appear on the face of the fabric. 'Panel wrap' and 'wrap stripe' are examples of embroidery plating produced in this way.(sun category of plated fabric weft-knitted) |
Emerizing |
A process in which fabric is passed over a series of rotating emery-covered rollers to produce uede-like finish. Note.. A similar process is known as 'sueding'. |
Empress fabric |
A 1x2 twill-face and finely ribbed backed double-faced woollen dress fabric. |
Emulsion |
A suspension of finely divided liquid droplets in a second liquid i.e. oil in water or vice versa. |
Emulsion Polymerization |
A three-phase reaction system consisting of monomer an aqueous phase containing the initiator and colloidal particles of polymer. Polymerization takes place in the colloidal phase. The process enables the production of very high molecular weights at increased polymerization rates. Only applicable to addition polymers. |
Emulsion Spinning |
The process of spinning synthetic polymers in dispersion form then heating to coalesce the dispersed particles. Normally a matrix polymer provides support until coalescence is completed. |
End |
1. (Spinning, braiding) An individual strand. 2. (Weaving) An individual warp thread. 3. (Fabric) A length of finished fabric less than a customary unit (piece) in length. (In certain districts a half-piece.) 4. (Finishing) Each passage of a length of fabric through a machine, for example, in jig-dyeing. 5. (Finishing) A joint between pieces of fabric due, for example, to damage or short lengths in weaving or damage in bleaching, dyeing, or finishing. |

End brasses (lace machines) |
Brass spacing-pieces set vertically between two supporting bars attached to a Leavers lace machine at each end. They serve to guide and separate the steel bars where they fan out between the well and the jacquard at one end and between the well and the spring frame at the other end. |
End Out |
A void caused by a missing warp yarn. |
