Doubling (knitting)

In the process of joining a rib border to the body of a garment, the action of joining two rib loops to one body loop, at spaced intervals. This is necessary when, in order to give a better fit, a rib border has more loops than the body. At these spaced intervals, two rib loops may be run into one point during bar-filling.

Doublings (drawing)

The number of laps, slivers, slubbings, or rovings fed simultaneously into a machine for drafting into a single end.
Note: Doubling is employed to promote blending and regularity.

Doupion

A silk-breeding term meaning double-cocoon; hence, an irregular, raw, rough silk reeled from double cocoons.
Note: Doupion is often used as weft for furnishing fabrics.

Douppioni

A rough or irregular yarn made of silk reeled from double or triple cocoons. Fabrics of douppioni have an irregular appearance with long thin slubs. Douppioni-like yarns are now being spun from polyester and/or rayon staple.

1. Originally, a plain-woven coarse linen fabric used for clothing.
2. A low-quality cotton fabric made of coarse rough-spun yarn, finished to imitate linen and used for towels, aprons, etc.

A dry-spinning machine in which the airflow within the drying cabinet is in the same direction as the yarn path (downward).

In quality control the lowering of the grade and/or value of a product due to the presence of defects.

Downtwisting

A system of producing a folded yarn by twisting together two or more single yarns using ringand-traveller as the twisting technique. The terms ring twisting and downtwisting are also used when the same technique is employed to increase or decrease the twist in a single yarn. (See also uptwisting.)

1. To reduce the linear density of a fibrous assembly by drawing.
2. When drafting, the degree of attenuation calculated either as the ratio of the input to output linear densities, or as the ratio of the surface speeds of the output and input machine components which bring about drafting.

Draft (clothing)

A scale plan of a garment or garment section. Drafting is the process of creating flat patterns from 3-dimensional measurements.

Draft board

A device which forms part of a rope-scouring machine (dolly scouring machine or a rotary milling i-nachine) and keeps separate the ropes of fabrics scoured at the same time. In a rotary milling machine or a combined scouring and milling machine, the draft board may also serve as a stop motion should the fabric become entangled in the machine.
