Double jersey, weft-knitted

A generic name applied to a range of knitted fabrics made on a rib or interlock basis, the construction of which is often designed to reduce the natural extensibility of the structure. The term is generally confined to fabrics knitted on machines of E IO gauge or finer and it may be classified as either non-jacquard or jacquard double jersey. For examples of non-jacquard fabrics see bourrelet, double piqu'e, Swiss double piqu'e, French double piqu'e, eight-lock, interlock, Milano rib, half-Milano rib, piquette, punto di Roma, single piqu'e, and texipiqu'e; and for jacquard fabric see rib jacquard (weft knitting).

Double knitting yarn

A four-ply handknitting yam with a resultant yarn number of approximately 440tex.

Double lift (weaving)

A term applied to dobbies (see dobby) andjacquard mechanisms in which there are two knives or griffes, one operating on odd picks, the other on even picks, to effect the lift (see lift (weaving)).

A plain net machine in which the motion of the carriages is imparted by driving and locker bars.

A worsted twill tape, generally with a two-fold warp.

Double marl

A yarn which has been produced from a roving of one end of two colours (as in single marl) twisted with one end of another two colours that have been roved together (see roving).(sub category of worsted yarns, colour terms)

Double pick (defect)

The insertion of two picks in a shed during weaving where only one is intended. The fault may appear as a line across the width of the fabric.

Double piqu'e, weft-knitted

A non-jacquard double jersey fabric made on a rib basis, using a selection of knitted loops and floats. The two most important sequences are known as Swiss and French double piqu'e respectively, and the knitting sequences for each are shown. Double piqud is also known as 'wevenit', 'rodier', and 'overnit'. (See also double jersey, weft-knitted.)

Double plain

A form of woven double fabric. (See also double cloth, woven.)

Double plush, warp-knitted

A pile fabric produced on a double needle bar raschel warp-Knitting machine, by knitting separate ground fabrics on each needle bar and connecting them by pile threads which knit on both needle bars so that two fabrics are produced face to face. The fabrics are then separated to produce two cut pile fabrics.

Double roving spinning

A system in which two rovings are fed to each spindle of a ring frame so producing a pseudo two-fold or two-strand yarn. The rovings are separated in the drafting system by means of special guides and the two drafted strands then combined after the drafting system. (See also spinning.)
Note: The term was originally used to describe the spinning of a yarn from a two-roving feed

Double satin

A warp-backed satin, frequently used for ribbons, with the backing ends stitched in sateen order to present a warp-satin surface on both sides of the fabric.
