Chameleon

A variable multicolored effect achieved by using warp yarns of one color and two filling yarns of different colors in each shed. It is sometimes used in taffeta faille or poplin made from silk or manufactured filament yarns.

Change Inlingth On Untwisting

The increase or decrease in length measured when a specimen is untwisted. The change is expressed as the percentage extension or contraction of the nominal gauge length of the specimen i.e. specimen length prior to untwisting.

A narrow passage formed between plies of material in a garment or by attachment of an additional ply of material, usually to house a draw cord.

A term used synonymously for damaged length.
Note: In some national standards, char length is defined by a specific test method.

Charachteristics

Lyocell fiber is stronger than other cellulosic fibers. It is inherently absorbent having a water imbibition of 65%-75%. Lyocell retains 85% of its dry tenacity when wet making it stronger when wet than cotton. The fiber has a density of 1.15 g/cm3.

Charged system

A method of dry cleaning in which an oil-soluble reagent such as petroleum sulphonate is added to the solvent so that a significant amount of water can be added to obtain a substantially clear dispersion of water in the solvent. In a high-cliarged system the concentration of added reagent, a so-called detergent, is 4 per cent while in a low-charged system the concentration ranges from 3/4 per cent to 2 per cent.

Charmante satin

A double-wefted fabric, the face being a 1/2 twill and the back a weft sateen developed from thick, low-twist weft.

Charmelaine

A 1x2 twill dress fabric made from botany wool warp and weft that has a twill nepp effect by virtue of a high-sett two-fold fine warp and a low-sett thick hard-twisted weft.

Chase

The conical part of the body of yarn in cop, bobbin, or pirn form on which the thread is coiled during one traversing cycle.

Chase length

1. The length of the conical portion of a package, measured along its surface.
2. The length of yarn wound on to a package in one complete traversing cycle.

Check spring (sewing machine)

A spring-loaded guide on a lockstitch sewing machine which takes up slack in the upper/needle thread during the sewing cycle.

Checking

The action of arresting the shuttle in the shuttle box after picking.

Cheek (fabric)

1. Two or more stripes of colour in the warp and weft direction resulting in a square or crossing line pattern.
2. A stripe of surface effects (i.e., caused by using different weaves and/or yarns) in the warp and weft direction resulting in a square or crossing line pattern.

Cheese

A cylindrical package of yarn, cross-wound on to a flangeless support. During winding the traverse length i-nay be progressively reduced to produce tapered or rounded ends; such packages are then referred to as tapered, pineapple, or biconical cheeses.
